Swiss Red Cross – Victims of Forgotten Disasters

People in many countries around the world are suffering from the consequences of poverty and violent conflicts, and yet they go unnoticed by the general public. The Swiss Red Cross helps the victims of these "forgotten" disasters.

Every year as many as 1.4 million children die from avoidable diseases in the poorest countries. Because of dirty drinking water, malnutrition and insufficient sanitary facilities, children and women in particular are physically weak and susceptible to diseases. When the media spotlight moves on to other breaking news, the victims remain. But the Red Cross keeps working, even when no–one else cares. Wherever public health is at risk, the Swiss Red Cross works to provide a better future.

Caring for the sick and fighting infectious diseases are among the core activities of the Red Cross and Red Crescent. The Swiss Red Cross also reinforces the healthcare system in remote regions and provides training for medical staff and volunteers. They then treat sick people, such as tuberculosis patients in the Amazon region of Ecuador. In Malawi in southern Africa, AIDS patients are given counselling. The SRC is also working in Asia and Africa to prevent poverty–induced blindness and treat eye diseases.

10’000 Points can equip a clinic in Bangladesh with a stethoscope, a ruler and scales. These are needed to examine children.

Thanks to your donation, we can carry on providing the necessary aid. Thank you!
